You can just go ahead and do what you know is right. Okay, so we're now getting to\n354.04 - 360.12: the point that got me really curious about Harris. We have this list of initial influences that\n360.12 - 364.44: have informed her life, but now we get to the more visible part. What she did when she was in the\n364.44 - 370.44: public eye during her career, her decisions, her words, they paint a picture and I want to show it\n370.44 - 375.16: to you. Most important things don't come easy. So it's not going to be a cake watch. There's a\n375.16 - 380.28: lot of work to do. Okay, but before we dive in, let's define this word prosecutor, which is a\n380.28000000000003 - 381.8: is a word that you're gonna hear a lot\n381.8 - 383.56: when you talk about Kamala Harris.\n383.56 - 386.6: A public prosecutor is the government's lawyer.\n386.6 - 389.08000000000004: They are responsible for presenting the evidence\n389.08000000000004 - 390.84000000000003: and the case against people or businesses\n390.84000000000003 - 392.40000000000003: accused of committing a crime.\n392.40000000000003 - 393.84000000000003: And here in the United States,\n393.84000000000003 - 397.04: they're often seen as hawks, they're tough on crime,\n397.04 - 399.40000000000003: responsible for upholding America's habit\n399.40000000000003 - 403.24: of throwing millions in jail for non-violent crimes, okay?\n403.24 - 405.88000000000005: Public prosecutor, big part of Kamala Harris's life.\n405.88 - 409.15999999999997: So after law school, Harris becomes a public prosecutor\n409.15999999999997 - 411.88: in California, first in Alameda County,\n411.88 - 413.68: and then for the city of San Francisco,\n413.68 - 416.48: and then eventually for the entire state of California.\n416.48 - 419.84: So now Kamala Harris, this activist turned\n419.84000000000003 - 424.96000000000004: kind of politician lawyer takes on the role that is kind of the definition of tough on\n424.96000000000004 - 430.8: crime, working to convict criminals, advocating to lock them up, and upholding the status\n430.8 - 432.6: quo of our justice system.\n432.6 - 434.84000000000003: Serious and violent crime, lock them up.\n434.84000000000003 - 438.12: But, Hera says that she's a different kind of public prosecutor.\n438.12 - 442.6: She calls herself a progressive prosecutor, huh?\n442.6 - 445.48: This strikes people as kind of a contradiction.\n445.48 - 448.76000000000005: Are you soft on crime or are you tough on crime?\n448.76 - 453.14: Instead, I believe we should be asking, are we smart on crime?\n453.14 - 457.71999999999997: Again, here in the United States, progressives tend to advocate for reform to our justice\n457.71999999999997 - 458.71999999999997: system.\n458.71999999999997 - 463.21999999999997: They say that the system is too harsh, locking up way too many people who are disproportionately\n463.22 - 469.78000000000003: brown and black men, often for non-violent crimes and for far too long. That's one of many critiques.\n469.78000000000003 - 474.02000000000004: And as I mentioned, prosecutors are kind of seen as the ones doing the locking up. So to get through\n474.02 - 478.74: this next section, let's put both of these words on a scale. And as we look at her career,\n478.74 - 484.34: let's assess what she's done that represents the progressive side of the scale, and what of her\n484.34000000000003 - 488.34000000000003: actions represent more of the traditional prosecutor side. I'm going to go through the\n488.34000000000003 - 492.74: progressive side first, but then I will get to the prosecutor side. So don't forget that that's coming.\n492.74 - 496.82000000000005: Early intervention leaves room in our prisons for the violent criminals who should be there.\n496.82 - 499.65999999999997: First up, Harris says that being a progressive prosecutor\n499.65999999999997 - 502.62: means holding serious criminals to account\n502.62 - 506.04: while focusing on preventing crime in the first place.\n506.04 - 509.38: She focuses on stopping the crime before it happens.\n509.38 - 511.02: And to do this, throughout her career,\n511.02 - 513.02: she focuses a lot on data.\n526.82 - 531.5400000000001: The context here is that crime is one of those issues that easily scares us.\n531.5400000000001 - 535.22: No matter your political leanings, every person wants to feel safe.\n535.22 - 540.1800000000001: So there's a lot of emotions driving how our justice system works, how we treat criminals.\n540.1800000000001 - 542.2600000000001: But Harris wanted to change this.\n556.82 - 558.9000000000001: She's building public databases.\n558.9000000000001 - 563.1400000000001: Let's focus on what we can do to prevent crime before it occurs.\n563.1400000000001 - 565.1400000000001: Publishing statistics on crimes.\n565.1400000000001 - 569.5400000000001: Elementary school students missing 60, 70, 80 days of 180 day school year.\n569.5400000000001 - 570.6600000000001: Arrest data.\n570.66 - 574.26: I was told prosecutors don't need to focus on recidivism.\n574.26 - 578.5: I was told prosecutors should not focus on the needs of children.\n578.5 - 580.74: A public database for police practices.\n580.74 - 582.98: Did an analysis of who our homicide victims were?\n582.98 - 585.14: 94% of them were high school dropouts.\n600.66 - 603.4599999999999: And in a few cases, she actually did that.\n603.4599999999999 - 609.06: So I decided I was going to start prosecuting parents for truancy.\n609.06 - 612.36: Well, this was a little controversial in San Francisco.\n612.36 - 616.86: And frankly, my staff went bananas. They were very concerned.\n616.86 - 621.02: Okay, a few more things on the progressive side of the scale here, and then we'll get to the prosecutor side.\n621.02 - 623.22: She fought against applying the death penalty.\n623.22 - 627.22: She fought big banks and won convictions after the 2008 housing crisis.\n627.22 - 632.34: We have delivered to California $18 billion\n632.34 - 634.5400000000001: in relief for California's homeowners.\n634.5400000000001 - 636.98: She fought and won a billion dollars\n636.98 - 640.02: for victims of a predatory for-profit university.\n640.02 - 642.9: We are talking about Corinthian colleges\n642.9 - 646.22: taking advantage of Californians\n646.22 - 649.58: who simply aspire to achieve the American dream.\n649.58 - 652.46: And perhaps her most nationally recognized moment\n652.46 - 655.0600000000001: as Attorney General is the moment where she told\n655.0600000000001 - 657.98: the Clerk of Los Angeles to begin issuing marriage licenses\n657.98 - 659.48: to same-sex couples.\n659.48 - 661.46: Back during when this was a big debate\n661.46 - 664.84: around Proposition 8 or the legality of gay marriage.\n664.84 - 666.48: This is <PRESIDIO_ANONYMIZED_PERSON>.\n666.48 - 669.0400000000001: You must start marriages immediately.\n672.48 - 673.9200000000001: Okay, but hold your horses.\n673.9200000000001 - 675.36: There's another side to this story.\n675.36 - 677.4000000000001: So far, I've made Harris look like this\n677.4 - 680.64: reform-minded, progressive champion as a prosecutor,\n680.64 - 683.16: but let's look at the other side of the scale.\n683.16 - 685.72: I took on perpetrators of all kinds.\n685.72 - 686.56: Lock them up.\n686.56 - 688.64: Pressibly prosecuting violent criminals\n688.64 - 691.84: as San Francisco's first African-American DA.\n691.84 - 693.5600000000001: First, the death penalty.\n693.5600000000001 - 695.48: In 2014, as attorney general,\n695.48 - 698.5600000000001: in a seemingly reversal of her previous actions\n698.5600000000001 - 699.8000000000001: as district attorney,\n699.8000000000001 - 701.88: she actually fought to keep the death penalty\n701.88 - 704.4: in California by appealing a ruling\n704.4 - 706.64: that would have effectively ended it in the state.\n706.64 - 708.92: In another case, the Supreme Court came out and said\n708.92 - 711.56: that California's prisons were so overcrowded\n711.56 - 713.76: that it violated the Constitution\n713.76 - 716.28: as cruel and unusual punishment.\n716.28 - 719.36: And yet, her office supported the governor's fight\n719.36 - 721.16: against releasing prisoners.\n721.16 - 723.64: Over the years, she resisted or fought against\n723.64 - 725.6: some criminal justice reforms.\n725.6 - 728.12: Her office prosecuted almost 2,000 people\n728.12 - 730.1999999999999: in cannabis related offenses,\n730.1999999999999 - 732.52: as well as defending the cash bail,\n732.52 - 735.28: which critics see as unfairly punishing\n735.28 - 736.64: lower income defendants.\n736.64 - 738.3199999999999: Okay, I know this is a lot of like,\n738.3199999999999 - 740.6: we are in the weeds of the justice system.\n740.6 - 741.76: And like with the Trump video,\n741.76 - 745.48: I was able to be like in the weeds on like branded vodka\n745.48 - 747.76: and giant towers in New York City.\n747.76 - 750.28: But Kamala's story is actually this.\n750.28 - 752.28: It's like she has been in the weeds\n752.28 - 754.12: on criminal justice policy,\n754.12 - 757.36: and her critics and her fans debate\n757.36 - 762.08: as to how progressive or hawkish she was in the system.\n762.08 - 764.4000000000001: And so that is how we are evaluating her here.\n764.4000000000001 - 766.9200000000001: I know it's not as fun as watching Donald Trump\n766.9200000000001 - 770.84: like be in the apprentice, but this is her career.\n770.84 - 773.84: Jeez, California's most innovative district attorney.\n773.84 - 775.5600000000001: After going through all of these critiques,\n775.5600000000001 - 779.8800000000001: you can see why some liberals call BS on her whole idea\n779.8800000000001 - 782.22: of being a progressive prosecutor,\n782.22 - 783.8000000000001: saying that her career was actually built off\n783.8000000000001 - 786.32: of maintaining a tough on crime policy\n786.32 - 788.6: while sprinkling in some progressive reforms.\n788.6 - 790.2: No matter how you judge all of this,\n790.2 - 793.9200000000001: what's clear is that Harris continues to mind that balance\n793.9200000000001 - 795.5200000000001: that she has her whole life,\n795.5200000000001 - 799.32: where she clearly has earnest progressive values and ideals,\n799.32 - 803.26: but she also is pragmatic and works within the system\n803.26 - 805.32: that she believes is where she can make change,\n805.32 - 807.08: which means upholding the status quo.\n807.08 - 808.6: But what this looks like, especially now\n808.6 - 811.0400000000001: that she's under the microscope of the entire world,\n811.0400000000001 - 813.1600000000001: no one really knows where she stands\n813.1600000000001 - 815.5600000000001: because there's seemingly contradictory\n815.5600000000001 - 818.08: or inconsistent behavior here.\n818.08 - 820.0: I'll share my read on that in just a sec,\n820.0 - 822.76: but first, let's see what happens next.\n822.76 - 825.5200000000001: I am excited to stand before you\n825.5200000000001 - 828.1600000000001: as a proud California candidate\n828.1600000000001 - 829.5200000000001: for the United States Center.\n830.96 - 834.6800000000001: The election has been exhausting because of the news cycle.\n834.6800000000001 - 837.0000000000001: I feel like every day there's like 150 news stories\n837.0000000000001 - 838.4000000000001: that I should be following,\n838.4000000000001 - 840.8800000000001: but they're coming from all these different news outlets\n840.8800000000001 - 843.1600000000001: that all have different biases.\n843.1600000000001 - 844.84: Luckily, there is a solution for that,\n844.84 - 847.8000000000001: and that is the sponsor of today's video, Ground News.\n847.8000000000001 - 849.8000000000001: Ground News aggregates news stories\n849.8000000000001 - 859.78: of this different coverage.\n859.78 - 862.64: What articles lean right, what articles lean left,\n862.64 - 865.4: the factuality rating, how reliable it is,\n865.4 - 867.9200000000001: and who owns these different news outlets,\n867.9200000000001 - I say we fight. I intend to fight.\n947.0200000000001 - 951.2600000000001: Now Harris is a prosecutor, a professional legal fighter,\n951.26 - 956.54: And over the next few years, she used her experience to grill Trump cabinet officials\n956.54 - 958.62: and nominees as they came before the Senate.\n958.62 - 963.26: Can you think of any laws that give the government the power to make\n963.26 - 965.42: decisions about the male body?\n965.4200000000001 - 971.96: Has the president or anyone at the White House ever asked or suggested that you open an investigation of anyone?\n971.96 - 973.22: Yes or no, please, sir.\n973.22 - 974.72: Perhaps they've suggested.\n974.72 - 976.2400000000001: I don't know. I wouldn't say suggest.\n976.2400000000001 - 978.8000000000001: And then two years later,\n978.8000000000001 - 985.7600000000001: I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States.\n985.7600000000001 - 991.1200000000001: During this campaign, like everyone in a Democratic campaign, she swung far to the left,\n991.1200000000001 - 996.8800000000001: saying that she espoused pretty, like, left-leaning policies, something that has come back to bite her\n996.88 - 998.96: basically every week during this election.\n998.96 - 1002.24: But she didn't gain traction and she soon pulled out of the race.\n1002.24 - 1004.64: I'm suspending our campaign today.\n1004.64 - 1008.88: But soon she got a call from the Democratic nominee to join the ticket.\n1008.88 - 1010.32: You ready to go to work?\n1010.32 - 1013.12: Oh my god. I'm so many good work.\n1013.12 - 1018.32: And as the vice presidential nominee during the debates especially, her experiences as a prosecutor\n1018.32 - 1020.4000000000001: continue to define her reputation.\n1020.4000000000001 - 1022.4000000000001: You shouldn't have appealed to Trump tax companies.\n1022.4000000000001 - 1023.7600000000001: Mr. Vice President, I'm speaking.\n1023.76 - 1026.36: I'm speaking.\n1026.36 - 1029.6: Biden and Harris won the White House in 2020.\n1029.6 - 1032.64: We did it, we did it, Charles.\n1032.64 - 1035.96: But while I may be the first woman in this office,\n1035.96 - 1037.52: I will not be the last.\n1037.52 - 1039.6: Okay, now listen, I'm gonna be honest here.\n1039.6 - 1041.96: When I started the reporting this story,\n1041.96 - 1043.32: I kind of thought that this next part\n1043.32 - 1044.8: was gonna be the juiciest part.\n1044.8 - 1046.76: Like what does she do when she's vice president?\n1046.76 - 1049.28: And it ended up being the least helpful\n1049.28 - 1051.28: in understanding Kamala Harris.\n1051.28 - 1053.12: I've wrestled with this and concluded\n1053.12 - 1056.56: that I can't exactly learn a ton about Harris\n1056.56 - 1058.72: from her four years as vice president,\n1058.72 - 1061.12: partly because it was Joe Biden's administration\n1061.1200000000001 - 1064.0000000000002: and the vice president doesn't really like call the shots.\n1064.0000000000002 - 1066.98: And partly because of the task that she was given,\n1066.98 - 1071.3000000000002: which was the duty of fixing the root causes of migration\n1071.3000000000002 - 1074.2600000000002: from Central America to the US's southern border.\n1074.26 - 1076.7: Like, good luck.\n1076.7 - 1079.46: The mandate was go use American power\n1079.46 - 1082.18: to fix poverty, systemic corruption,\n1082.18 - 1085.06: and gang violence in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras\n1085.06 - 1087.62: so that people stop trying to come to the United States.\n1087.62 - 1090.26: I've reported a lot on migration and borders,\n1104.26 - 1110.74: dangerous trek to the United States' Mexico border. Do not come. Do not come.\"\n1110.74 - 1116.94: Now, you can read her five-pillar plan, but when I read it, it just feels kind of bland\n1116.94 - 1123.5800000000002: and familiar. Like the many reports with aspirational language about how the US can somehow fix systemic\n1123.5800000000002 - 1129.18: problems in other countries. Stuff like this does not work, or if it does, it does not work quickly.\n1129.18 - 1134.22: And to add to all of this, the American people seem to misunderstand what her task actually was,\n1134.22 - 1138.38: and this includes me, and I'm embarrassed to say this, but I, like a lot of people,\n1138.38 - 1142.7800000000002: thought that Kamala Harris was in charge of like the border, like this border situation,\n1142.7800000000002 - 1146.94: like she was supposed to fix what we do with people coming to the border.\n1146.94 - 1151.5: And all I'm seeing on TV is record numbers of migrants arriving to the border,\n1151.5 - 1154.26: huge numbers of unaccompanied young people,\n1154.26 - 1155.74: and not just from Central America,\n1155.74 - 1157.3: but from tons of countries.\n1157.3 - 1160.78: Who was the blame for this big crisis on the border?\n1160.78 - 1162.54: Many looked at the vice president,\n1162.54 - 1166.6599999999999: Because wasn't she the borders are in charge of all of this?\n1166.6599999999999 - 1169.82: No, she wasn't, but we all thought she was.\n1169.82 - 1173.02: And it didn't help that in one of her first media appearances,\n1173.02 - 1176.1399999999999: she kind of waffled some pretty basic questions about this.\n1176.14 - 1180.46: whole thing about the border. We've been to the border. We've been to the border. You haven't\n1180.46 - 1186.6200000000001: been to the border. And I haven't been to Europe. Now, to be fair and generous here, I should say\n1186.6200000000001 - 1189.14: that when you look at the most recent data,\n1189.14 - 1193.3400000000001: migration to the US border has gone down quite a bit,\n1193.3400000000001 - 1195.2600000000002: especially if you look at people coming\n1195.2600000000002 - 1197.44: from the three countries that Kamala Harris\n1197.44 - 1199.2600000000002: was tasked with fixing.\n1199.2600000000002 - 1200.22: And if I were Kamala Harris,\n1200.22 - 1204.8600000000001: I would be touting this, shouting it from the rooftops as a huge success of her big role.\n1204.8600000000001 - 1207.72: And while I think her initiatives of like meeting with the leaders and trying to get\n1207.72 - 1212.46: more business to Central America to like make jobs and fix these root problems were earnest\n1212.46 - 1218.06: and well-intentioned, I just truly don't think that it's reasonable for us to evaluate her\n1218.06 - 1223.58: based on any of these metrics. A vice president has no chance of fixing these deeply rooted\n1223.58 - 1226.74: systemic issues in other countries in just a few years.\n1226.74 - 1228.74: Okay, I've made that point.\n1228.74 - 1229.74: Let's move on.\n1229.74 - 1232.74: Look, I'm not a young guy.\n1232.74 - 1237.02: Joe Biden is extraordinarily strong.\n1237.02 - 1238.58: Bad debate nights happen.\n1238.58 - 1239.58: Trust me.\n1239.58 - 1243.58: President Biden has decided to step out of the race for the White House.\n1243.58 - 1247.58: He is offering his full support and endorsement for Kamala Harris.\n1247.58 - 1249.58: I accept your nomination.\n1253.58 - 1256.58: So, here we are, kind of in modern day.\n1256.58 - 1258.58: We all know what happens next.\n1258.58 - 1261.8999999999999: Vice President Kamala Harris gets thrust into becoming\n1261.8999999999999 - 1264.62: the presidential nominee for the Democratic Party,\n1264.62 - 1267.62: as Joe Biden comes to grips with the fact that his age\n1267.62 - 1270.22: and declining mental acuity was a guarantee\n1270.22 - 1271.6999999999998: that he would lose and Donald Trump\n1271.6999999999998 - 1272.78: would be our next president.\n1272.78 - 1274.66: I really don't know what he said at the end of this,\n1274.66 - 1276.7: and I don't think he knows what he said either.\n1276.7 - 1278.5: So Harris is now in the spotlight,\n1278.5 - 1281.66: and voters are wondering how she will be as a president.\n1281.66 - 1284.42: What does her past, both personal and professional,\n1284.42 - 1287.22: tell us about how she'll govern?\n1287.22 - 1290.3400000000001: And the answer to that is pretty unclear.\n1290.3400000000001 - 1292.3400000000001: Partly because over the course of her career,\n1292.3400000000001 - 1295.26: Harris has shifted and morphed her views\n1295.26 - 1298.06: based on the system and the situation that she's in.\n1298.06 - 1300.94: That's what we've seen as we've talked about it here briefly.\n1300.94 - 1302.9: She doesn't have a record that shows\n1302.9 - 1306.02: some absolute ideological consistency,\n1306.02 - 1308.42: which has been perhaps her number one critique\n1308.42 - 1312.14: that Kamala's record simply is not consistent.\n1312.14 - 1315.6200000000001: And yet, her character seems to be consistent.\n1315.6200000000001 - 1318.3400000000001: Her lived experience is as well.\n1318.3400000000001 - 1320.8200000000002: So after doing this research on her life,\n1320.8200000000002 - 1322.5800000000002: I do believe her when she says,\n1322.5800000000002 - 1324.18: is my values have not changed.\n1324.18 - 1327.1200000000001: And this election is weird.\n1327.1200000000001 - 1328.24: They're getting weirder every time,\n1328.24 - 1329.68: but this one's super weird.\n1329.68 - 1331.8: She's running against a showman,\n1331.8 - 1334.96: a professional marketer, businessman caricature,\n1334.96 - 1337.8: who campaigns on his non-political achievements,\n1337.8 - 1340.82: His personality, not his policy proposals,\n1340.82 - 1343.98: Kamala Harris was born to immigrant parents\n1343.98 - 1345.46: who came to the United States\n1345.46 - 1347.78: looking for education and opportunity.\n1347.78 - 1349.62: And through hard work and endurance,\n1349.62 - 1353.3799999999999: she pushed her way up through the ranks to where she is today,\n1353.38 - 1357.38: all without serious scandals or dings to her character.\n1357.38 - 1358.7: The only thing we could dig up on her\n1358.7 - 1361.3000000000002: is that she dated the mayor of San Francisco\n1361.3000000000002 - 1364.98: and that mayor may not have helped her get a job\n1364.98 - 1368.1000000000001: or a position on some insurance board,\n1368.1000000000001 - 1371.1000000000001: but this was like a consensual relationship.\n1371.1000000000001 - 1372.9800000000002: There was no cheating, like it's not very juicy.\n1372.9800000000002 - 1375.46: So regardless of what you think of her politics,\n1375.46 - 1376.7: her stance on crime,\n1376.7 - 1379.1000000000001: I do think it is still legitimate\n1379.1000000000001 - 1381.5800000000002: to consider this personal character,\n1381.58 - 1383.3799999999999: especially when we're thinking about\n1383.3799999999999 - 1385.86: the most powerful person in our country,\n1385.86 - 1387.46: the leader of the country.\n1387.46 - 1390.06: Because leaders lead with their personal experience\n1390.06 - 1392.5: as a guide, and this woman has lived a life\n1392.5 - 1396.58: that allows her to relate to a lot of everyday Americans,\n1396.58 - 1398.5: something that seems to be in short supply\n1398.5 - 1399.86: among leaders these days.\n1399.86 - 1402.8999999999999: So I don't know how Kamala Harris will govern\n1402.8999999999999 - 1404.22: if she becomes president.\n1404.22 - 1406.58: But from looking at her record,\n1406.58 - 1411.58: I do feel fairly convinced that she has a sense of ethics\n1411.58 - 1413.4199999999998: and morals and values.\n1413.4199999999998 - 1415.34: And I think that is important to consider.\n1415.34 - 1419.02: So if you are a voting age and you're an American,\n1419.02 - 1420.6999999999998: let me tell you one thing for certain.\n1420.6999999999998 - 1422.78: You are likely to not vote.\n1422.78 - 1425.1399999999999: In this country, only half of the people\n1441.58 - 1447.58: Um, for those still here, I just, you know, finished recording this video and, um,\n1448.1399999999999 - 1452.78: I just recorded the Trump one yesterday and I'm struck with how different they are.\n1452.78 - 1455.1799999999998: That could be a reflection of my personal bias.\n1455.18 - 1461.02: like obviously it came down somewhere on on each of these but it's also a reflection of the life\n1461.02 - 1466.7: the different lives that they've lived. Donald Trump's life is so full of tension and scandal\n1466.7 - 1472.22: and kind of tantalizing details and it and very like visual you know all of his products and\n1485.18 - 1490.5800000000002: It's very stark to me how these videos are going to feel differently, both because of\n1490.5800000000002 - 1492.3: the way that I approach them, but also visually.\n1492.3 - 1499.0600000000002: So I hope this was useful for those of you who are trying to understand Kamala Harris\n1499.06 - 1501.62: and are maybe deciding who to vote for or whatever.\n1501.62 - 1504.1: I hope that even in spite of some of the places I came down\n1504.1 - 1506.82: and some of my perspectives,\n1506.82 - 1510.4199999999998: that doesn't change the fact that you need to make up your mind\n1510.42 - 1514.5800000000002: and decide and go with your gut and do what you feel and the most important thing is that you vote\n1514.5800000000002 - 1519.46: that you like make it known. For those who don't know, all the music that we make for our videos\n1519.46 - 1524.5: is custom made by our composer Tom Fox.
