Jiaxu takes Sang Zhi on a special date
Notes:
(See the end of the work for notes.)
On her first weekend back in Nanwu, Jiaxu asked Sang Zhi to go on a special date with him. Try as she did, she couldn’t get any information out of him, and he insisted on her being patient. Sang Zhi finished doing her makeup as she waited for him to pick her up, as he had done every single night since she had returned home. It seemed he missed her so much that having her in the same city compelled him to see her every day. She went out to meet him as he pulled up to their house and he kissed her forehead as a greeting, causing her to smile shyly. He arrived earlier than expected so he decided to have breakfast with her parents first. Sang Rong and Li Ping warmly welcomed him and Sang Zhi’s smile grew so wide she couldn’t hide it if she tried. The months she spent torturing herself because they didn’t approve of Jiaxu were long forgotten. Being with him and her family in her home, after years of being away from them in Yihe, made her feel like she was living in a dream. “Where are the two of you off to?” Li Ping asked them as they wrapped up breakfast. “I have no idea, Ma and Ba, he refuses to tell me. He keeps saying that it’s a surprise.” Sang Zhi complained to them. “Oh, is it today?” Sang Rong asked Jiaxu and an understanding passed between them. Jiaxu nodded in response, a proud smile playing on his lips. “Wait, what is it? How come dad knows but I don’t?” Sang Zhi pouted. “It’s a surprise.” Li Ping assured her. “A surprise you’ll like.” “You too, Ma? Why do you all keep keeping secrets from me?” Her frustration was showing, she wasn’t used to being kept in the dark by her family. “When’s the last time we all kept a secret from you?” Li Ping asked her, confused. “When Jiaxu-ge was planning on proposing to me, you didn’t even give me a warning.” Sang Zhi answered quickly. Ok, that wasn’t fair for her to bring up, but it was true. “Zhi zhi—“ Jiaxu laughed. “I asked them to keep it a secret, and you wouldn’t have liked it if the secret got leaked anyway!” “Still!” Sang Zhi insisted. “Ok ok, I promise, just let us have this one last secret, which you’ll find out in a little bit anyway.” Jiaxu said, gathering her bag, her coat, and her in his arms, as it was almost time to go, after all, they had a very important appointment to catch. “Shu shu, A yi, we’ll go ahead and we’ll let you know how it goes.” She smiled as he strapped her seatbelt in like she was precious cargo being transported. He deflected all of her questions during the drive, insisting she could wait just a few more minutes. He didn’t keep her waiting long. They pulled up to a newly-built luxury apartment building complex about 20 minutes away from Sang Zhi’s parents’ neighborhood. And suddenly, Sang Zhi understood. A man met them out front carrying brochures for them, ready to tour them around the compound and the various units they had available. “The apartment will be ready for turn over next month.” The agent explained to Jiaxu and Sang Zhi. “I can move in first.” Jiaxu whispered to Sang Zhi. “That will give me two months to get the place ready for you so you can move in on our wedding night.” Sang Zhi smiled at that, she couldn’t wait. Him picking her up every night for a date was great and all, but she could tell that it was taking a toll on his sleep. Though she kept telling him he should get some rest, he’d always protest and ask for just a little bit more time with her. And how could she deny him that? They were both so greedy for each other’s company, considering past two years they spent apart, having to scrape together little pockets of time to spend together. The apartments were beautiful. Modern and sleek, with top-of-the line amenities and furnishings, yet homey. The rooms were spacious and the living room and kitchen and dining were more than what a two-person household would need. The agent left them alone to take a call as they were touring a four-bedroom apartment on the top floor. Sang Zhi, though, felt mildly unsettled. “Jiaxu-ge” Sang Zhi whispered urgently, “This seems a little excessive. We don’t need a 4-bedroom apartment.” Jiaxu chuckled and pulled her to the master bedroom. “Look, this has a massive walk-in closet, you can store all your clothes and shoes and bags easily. With lots of room to spare.” “I don’t have this many clothes.” Sang Zhi said, although secretly her heart had leapt at the thought of a walk-in closet like that. “You can buy more clothes.” Jiaxu cocked an eyebrow at her, a challenge. “I don’t need to.” She scoffed. She had plenty of clothes already, quite a few of them even given by him. “I want you to.” He shot back, relishing at the thought of spoiling his fiancée rotten. “A four-bedroom still seems excessive though.” Sang Zhi insisted. “There are only two of us, after all.” “Well, not for long, hopefully. We’re going to have kids in the future after all.” Jiaxu said, causing Sang Zhi’s heart to do somersaults in her chest. Starting a family with him would be a dream she couldn’t wait to come true. “I can use one room as my home office, and you can use one room as a study in the meantime.” “Then a three-bedroom will do just fine.” She countered. Sure, math wasn’t a particularly strong suit for her, but that math made sense to her. “You’re still going to need a home office in the future. Since you refuse to work with me staring at you from the bed.” He teased her, reminding her of the time she kicked him out of his own bedroom so she could revise in peace. “That’s because you don’t stop at staring. You slowly but surely end up—“ Sang Zhi trailed off, finishing with a stutter, “-you know.” “What do I do?” He asked, amusement glimmering in his eyes. “Undressing me.” Sang Zhi leveled her gaze at him, causing him to laugh out loud. “Alright.” Jiaxu led her to the balcony and turned her to face him. “What’s the real problem here? Do you really not like the apartment? I can find a different one if there’s something you don’t like about this one.” “Well. Why do you like this apartment?” She asked, looking up at him, curiosity brimming in her eyes. “Well, I chose this because it’s close to your parents’ house, but still far enough to give us privacy, Sang Yan’s bar is reasonably nearby, and my office isn’t too far either.” Jiaxu answered. He had thought of everything. “The neighborhood is new and safe, but there are good schools nearby for our future kids, a few blocks away is a mall with a great cinema, and there’s a grocery and a 24-hour fruit stand within walking distance.” “And those are all really, really great things.” Sang Zhi conceded. “It’s just, it’s too expensive.” There it was, finally. Honesty from her. Jiaxu asked, “Are you afraid I can’t afford it?” “Again, I’m just saying you don’t have to waste your money.” Sang Zhi said, reaching for his waist and pulling him towards her. “Duan Jiaxu, I’ll be perfectly happy living in a studio apartment with you. We don’t need much. We’ll have a small kitchen, a bed, we’ll have each other, we’ll be just as happy!” “Zhi zhi, how can I make you go from living in a big house to a studio apartment?” Jiaxu said indigantly, sure, he was touched by the thought that she’d be happy as long as she had him, but still. “Look, when I talked to your parents to convince them I’d be good for you, I promised them I’d take good care of you.” “Everyone already knows you’re so good to me.” Sang Zhi said, and it was true. “Besides, my parents aren’t going to be living in that studio apartment with us.” “You smarty pants.” Jiaxu laughed, leaning closer towards her to look her level in the eye. “Look, I can afford this. I promise you.” “And I’m saying you don’t have to afford this on my account.” She was growing frustrated at how stubborn he was being. "I don't trust that you're not just wasting your money on this luxury apartment that we don't need." “I want you to be able to show your place off. You won’t be ashamed to invite your friends over, have your roommates stay with us whenever they visit you in Nanwu. You parents can even come over and stay with us if they’d like. Even Sang Yan.” He explained. “My roommates can stay in a hotel and my parents have their own house.” Sang Zhi explained patiently. “And Sang Yan barely even goes home, he prefers staying in his own apartment. Besides, I’ll be able to show off our place no matter what it is, because I’ll be living with you, my handsome husband, whom I show off all the time.” Jiaxu laughed, at a loss on how to convince her, until a memory came unbidden to him, a memory of one night during her internship when she had drunkenly given him her bank card. He chuckled and retrieved his wallet. “Here, I have several bank cards in there, in total, we can afford the downpayment on this house and several years of installment on the mortgage, we can also afford the wedding of your dreams, the honeymoon you’ve always wanted to go on.” “We?” Sang Zhi stared at him. “My money is your money, Zhi zhi.” He responded, meaning every word. What was the point of him making all this money if not to give her the life she deserved and more? “I told you, you can’t spend money as fast as I make it.” “Jiaxu-ge.” Sang Zhi pleaded. “And I’m putting both of our names on the Deed of this apartment.” He continued, feeling the need to disclose it to her before she could make any more protests. “But I haven’t even contributed anything to it!” Her eyes widened in shock. “This is already a compromise, believe me.” He laughed. “I was going to put the deed under your name alone, but your father stopped me.” “Jiaxu-ge,” She pondered a bit, realized there was no convincing him, and relented. She retrieved her own wallet. “Here.” “You’re giving me your bank card again?” Jiaxu laughed. “I have more money in my card this time. I’ve saved up all my red pockets, my scholarship money, my living allowances from Sang Yan, my pay from all my internships.” Sang Zhi said. “It’s not much, but I can help you with the downpayment of this house.” “Have you been depriving yourself all these years in Yihe?” He asked, heart hurting at the thought of her scrimping and saving the past couple of years when she didn't have to. “I haven’t. I’ve just been too busy to spend money.” Sang Zhi assured him. “Besides, you kept sending me gifts, food, and treats for me and my roommates. You paid for all my trips back to Nanwu. Even my dorm fees were taken care of by you already.” Jiaxu’s chest puffed with pride. She kept promising him that she’d provide for him in the future, but he had to show her somehow that he could and would provide for her. “I’m telling you, Zhi zhi, we can afford this.” He assured her. “I’m diligent and hard-working. The studio is doing well, The Fox Tale is successful and is steadily growing. Headquarters has already approved our expansion and given us bonuses for a job well done. We’ll be more than ok.” Sang Zhi nodded, she knew his project, The Fox Tale, was extremely successful. After all, Yu Xin, her gamer college roommate, consistently kept her updated on what she had dubbed as her new favorite game, the highest of compliments for Jiaxu. She reached for him again. “Have I told you yet that I’m so incredibly proud of you, future husband?” “Only every single day, but hearing you say it over and over again doesn’t hurt.” Jiaxu smiled, taking her in his arms. “Hey, I told you I want to be someone you can rely on.” “When have you ever been otherwise?” Sang Zhi asked. “I’ve always known I could rely on you, ever since I was young.” “Yeah?” Jiaxu asked, and she nodded. “But I also want to be someone you can rely on.” Sang Zhi continued. “I don’t want you to think that you have to do this alone, Jiaxu-ge. I want to help you. Look, I’m starting my new job soon and you can’t stop me from contributing to our life. I want to do this, for you, for our family.” Jiaxu nodded, giving in. “Ok, so now tell me, what do you really think of this apartment?” “If I’m being honest. I love it." Sang Zhi finally smiled. "I can see us starting a family here. We can put a crib in the room without a balcony. I can see us celebrating birthdays on the roof deck. We can take walks in the park across the road. We can cook lots of meals in this kitchen, ok, well, you can cook, I’ll wash the dishes.” Jiaxu grinned at her, imagining all those things she mentioned. And suddenly she’s flitting around the apartment, pulling him along, pointing out her favorite parts and all the things she wanted to do to the place and God, he can see she’s finally happy. And he’s so happy she’s happy. His sole purpose in life, he decided right then, was just that, to make sure she’d always be this happy. Sang Zhi paused, taking a step closer to him, beckoning him to lean in close, and whispering conspiratorially. “And we can do it in every room in the house.” Jiaxu was not expecting that. Well that definitely solidified the decision for him and he called out to the agent. “We’re taking it!” Sang Zhi laughed and went on her tiptoes to kiss him. They were really doing this. He’d move in the following month, and she’d move in on their wedding night. They’d never have to be apart again. She’d get to wake up next to him every single morning, cook dinner for him and wait for him to get home on work nights, sleep in on weekends with him. They’d fill this apartment with love and laughter and, most importantly, Duan Jiaxu will never have to be alone again. “I love you Duan Jiaxu.” She planted another kiss on his lips. “I can’t wait to marry you and spend the rest of my life with you.” “I love you, Sang Zhi.” Jiaxu kissed her back. “I won’t let you regret marrying me.” She believed him.'
