Analysis of the table:
The data in Table 21 indicates a positive and highly significant relationship between English reading input enhancement and Task-based reading strategies. All variables of English reading input enhancement (Input Flood, Textual Enhancement, Cultural Enhancement, and Grammar consciousness-raising task) show strong positive correlations with Task-based reading strategies (Prediction, Vocabulary Skills, Skimming, Browsing, Structural Analysis, and Inference dispersion).
For Input Flood, the highest correlation is observed with Prediction (r = 0.409, p < 0.01), followed by Vocabulary Skills (r = 0.374, p < 0.01), Skimming (r = 0.348, p < 0.01), Browsing (r = 0.263, p < 0.01), Structural Analysis (r = 0.273, p < 0.01), and Inference dispersion (r = 0.362, p < 0.01). This suggests that a higher level of Input Flood is associated with higher proficiency in these Task-based reading strategies.
Similarly, Textual Enhancement shows significant correlations with Task-based reading strategies. The highest correlation is observed with Skimming (r = 0.429, p < 0.01), followed by Prediction (r = 0.445, p < 0.01), Vocabulary Skills (r = 0.346, p < 0.01), Browsing (r = 0.346, p < 0.01), Structural Analysis (r = 0.305, p < 0.01), and Inference dispersion (r = 0.420, p < 0.01). This indicates that Textual Enhancement plays a crucial role in enhancing these Task-based reading strategies.
In terms of Cultural Enhancement, it shows the highest correlation with Skimming (r = 0.561, p < 0.01), followed by Inference dispersion (r = 0.570, p < 0.01), Prediction (r = 0.619, p < 0.01), Vocabulary Skills (r = 0.532, p < 0.01), Structural Analysis (r = 0.484, p < 0.01), and Browsing (r = 0.510, p < 0.01). This indicates that Cultural Enhancement has a significant impact on improving these Task-based reading strategies.
Finally, Grammar consciousness-raising task also demonstrates a significant relationship with Task-based reading strategies. The highest correlation is observed with Prediction (r = 0.517, p < 0.01), followed by Structural Analysis (r = 0.516, p < 0.01), Vocabulary Skills (r = 0.531, p < 0.01), Browsing (r = 0.517, p < 0.01), Skimming (r = 0.456, p < 0.01), and Inference dispersion (r = 0.383, p < 0.01). This indicates that incorporating Grammar consciousness-raising tasks in reading instruction can enhance these Task-based reading strategies.
Interpretation:
As a researcher, the findings in Table 21 provide strong evidence for the positive impact of English reading input enhancement on Task-based reading strategies among Chinese non-English majors. The significant relationships between each variable of English reading input enhancement and Task-based reading strategies emphasize the importance of these strategies in developing English reading proficiency.
The findings suggest that a higher level of English reading input enhancement, including Input Flood, Textual Enhancement, Cultural Enhancement, and Grammar consciousness-raising tasks, leads to higher proficiency in Task-based reading strategies. This implies that by integrating various input enhancement techniques and strategies, Chinese non-English majors can effectively improve their reading proficiency in English.
The high significance level (p < 0.01) across all variables indicates a robust relationship between English reading input enhancement and Task-based reading strategies. These findings align with previous research that highlights the positive impact of input enhancement on language learning outcomes (e.g., Peacock, 2014; Yang, 2019). The incorporation of Task-based reading strategies, such as Prediction, Vocabulary Skills, Skimming, Browsing, Structural Analysis, and Inference dispersion, can further enhance reading proficiency among non-English majors.
In conclusion, the findings from this study provide valuable insights into the relationship between English reading input enhancement and Task-based reading strategies, contributing to the existing literature on second language reading instruction. These findings suggest that educators should focus on implementing various input enhancement techniques and Task-based reading strategies in their instruction to foster the development of English reading proficiency among Chinese non-English majors.
