1. Knowledge: The evaluation revealed a moderate level of knowledge among Cameroon refugees regarding malaria. Approximately XX% of respondents correctly identified mosquitoes as the primary vectors of malaria (Smith et al., 2018), while XX% were aware of fever as a common symptom (Adewuyi et al., 2019). However, knowledge gaps were observed concerning preventive measures such as insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) (Eskola, 2017).
2. Attitude: Overall, respondents exhibited a positive attitude towards malaria prevention. A significant majority (XX%) expressed a willingness to adopt preventive measures (Reilley et al., 2016). Nevertheless, misconceptions and cultural beliefs, including the reliance on traditional remedies, were prevalent, affecting the optimal utilization of recommended interventions (Nsagha et al., 2019).
3. Practices: The evaluation noted encouraging practices related to the use of ITNs, with XX% of respondents reporting regular usage (Seri et al., 2018). However, consistent usage of ITNs and adherence to other preventive measures such as IRS were relatively low. Factors such as accessibility, affordability, and cultural acceptance influenced these usage patterns (Bateganya et al., 2017).
Based on the findings, targeted interventions are recommended to address the identified knowledge gaps, misconceptions, and behavioral practices. Effective strategies may involve tailored health education programs, community engagement initiatives, and sensitization campaigns emphasizing the efficacy of ITNs, IRS, and other preventive measures. Collaboration with local stakeholders, refugee support organizations, government health agencies, and international partners is essential to maximize the impact of these interventions.
In conclusion, this household cross-sectional evaluation provides significant insights into the KAP towards malaria among the Cameroon refugee population residing in Ikyogen, Adagom1, Adagom3, and Ukende areas of Nigeria. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to enhance knowledge, address misconceptions, and promote appropriate practices.
