Developer Installation (Windows)
This section describes how to install the app (CLI and GUI) from source.

Note

You may want to use Windows WSL instead of Windows native installation and follow the instructions in the README.md instead.

Download and install system dependencies

Open a PowerShell as Administrator and install the following programs via winget

Build system dependencies via gvsbuild

Open a PowerShell as regular user and prepare the build environment. You may want to adjust the $project and point to another directory of your choice. In the following it will be used to build and install system dependencies, and we'll download and install Lada it in this location.

If the build fails with

AttributeError: module 'distutils' has no attribute 'ccompiler'. Did you mean: 'compilers'?

add the following line as a workaround

These variables need to be set for the next steps but also whenever you start lada.

Build remaining system dependencies

We need to build the Gstreamer GTK4 plugin (needed for the GUI video player) ourselves as it cannot be built with gvsbuild yet

On low-end hardware running mosaic detection model could run into a timeout defined in ultralytics library and the scene would not be restored. The following patch increases this time limit:

Open PowerShell as Administrator and run:

The script will install the system dependencies via winget and set the execution policy.
After installation, reboot your PC (the script will prompt for this).
Once rebooted, open PowerShell as a normal user, and run the script again to continue the build & installation.

I don't need visual studio build tools and vcdredist 2013 since its already installed, also project path would be I:\Lada. Also I don't need to insteall Python 3.13 in my Windows globally, preferably change script to make it installed and used portably from same project folder

Remove Microsoft.VisualStudio.2022.BuildTools and VCRedist 2013 installs.
Change project directory to I:\Lada.
Do not install global Python 3.13; instead, download portable Python into the project folder and use it there.
Adapt subsequent calls to use this portable Python binary for the whole install process (creating venvs, pip installs, etc).
Things to note for portable Python:
We will download the official embeddable zip of Python 3.13, unzip it inside the project folder (e.g. I:\Lada\python-portable).
Embedded Python misses some features like pip and venv by default, so sometimes people use the "web installer" or full MSI.
Since you want portable and full features, an alternative approach is to download the official full Windows installer as an embeddable zip and/or unpack full Python from official distribution, or Python embeddable (with added scripts).
For simplicity, I'll put a helper to download the official full Windows embeddable zip (from Python 3.13 release) and enable pip manually.

Save above to install_lada_portable.bat
Run as Administrator (right-click → Run as Administrator) to allow winget installs.
Wait patiently — script downloads files, sets up portable python, builds from source, downloads models.

These Instructions are based on my experience installing on multiple Windows 11 machines. At this time, only CLI version is working.

First install dependencies, one can use choco to do this:

Notes:
gstreamer is required for GUI version which is currently not working on Windows due to PyGObject Build Issues. Visual Studio is only required if you need to compile and build certain dependencies, say ffmpeg. If not lada does not require this. MSys2 is optional, the only use I had for it was to apply patches, one can do that manually. I strongly recommend that you get MSys2.

Installing GTK [Not required for CLI]
Download the October Release of GTK ZIP File from here: https://github.com/wingtk/gvsbuild/releases/tag/2024.10.0
Extract the contents of the ZIP file to D:\MyPrograms\GTK. Make sure you get right version, as anything after October is built with Python 3.13, and won't be compatible with 3.12. MMCV does not support Python 3.13 yet.

Add the following Environment Variables

From the root directory of the virtual environment I issued the following command:

lada-cli seems to have built fine, as it executed without any complaints. However I did get an error. Not sure why.

I figured out the issue, it was with the search path, added the following:

PYTHONPATH=D:\MyProjects\LadaEnv312\lada
And blast off... high utilization of Tesla M60, much higher than Deep Mosaic, and finished faster too.

While a small two minute video completed w/o any issues, I ran two 2Hr files through and they both did not finish. Following is the error message:

i think the issue is that your file extension is uppercase, try to use lowercase for now. will change it to support both / handle it case-insensitive.

i think the issue is that your file extension is uppercase, try to use lowercase for now. will change it to support both / handle it case-insensitive.

Changing the extension to lower case solved the issue. I was able to successfully convert one of the large file that failed before. Thanks for the workaround.

@ladaapp, I picked this up again today. However, an error that I seemed to have fixed earlier has come back. Couple of issues:
(1) git clone does not seem to get the new "lada_mosaic_restoration_model_generic_v1.2.pth". Therefore, I used the wget command in unix instructions to fetch it.
(2) Even with the file there, I am getting the following error:

Has anyone gotten the Lada Gui to actually work on Windows by compiling it themselves? The only such cases I could find are when they compile a program inside Msys2 that has libadwaita as a dependency and probably pyinstaller(based off of this project that was also written in python - Varia) @seatv As for IDEs, I think most people just use VS, PyCharm etc

Thanks, I have been using PyCharm. Has not been able to devote any time to this as I have been busy. One of my goals was to find where the input stream was being opened so that I can change it to use hardware acceleration and compare the results. I have not been able to break at that point.

If you start at the top, you will see that most of us on this thread has gotten CLI version to work, following the steps in the first post.

As for GUI, as you can see, we are still figuring things out.

I suggest that you get the CLI version working, I (we) can help if you have specific questions. Then, you can try standing up the GUI version. Not sure that has been successfully done yet.

A packaged version for Windows may not be available in the near future. My guess is that @ladaapp has other higher priority features that he wants to add to lada.

So, are you saying that you installed Feb release of MSYS2 and then got the GUI to run by installing gvsbuild? Something must have changed since the last time I tried gvsbuild. I shall give it a try later today and report back if it works for me.

I just use pip install gvsbuild, not the one you provided https://github.com/wingtk/gvsbuild/releases/tag/2024.10.0 you could reproduce everything via my command that I given both cli and gui the only issue probably might be when using gvsbuild requires to build gst-rtsp-server then build gst-python

Oh, I was using 2024.10.0 as that was the last prebuilt version that supported Py 3.12. Everything after was only released for Py > v3.13

I was only able to get the audio to work, trying to figure out how to get past the wglShareLists issue (seems for some reason some dependencies didn't build with OpenGL support even though I have Windows SDK installed) and trying to figure out why the colors in the video are messed up which are leaving me completely stumped at the moment

Correct, I saw the issue this time too, added the import statement, that fixed the pygobject build issue.

Also got a warning for MSVCR120.dll which was solved by installing Visual C++ Redistributable 2013 x86/x64
For me, this was an error as opposed to warning, the build failed. I installed the Redistributable per instructions here" https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/msvcr120dll-missing-and-is-not-being-fixed/80381906-8f63-4e20-bee5-e9b96ae0d238

Once I made the two changes, the following build succeeded:
gvsbuild build --configuration=release --build-dir="./gtk4" --enable-gi --py-wheel gtk4 adwaita-icon-theme pygobject libadwaita gstreamer gst-plugins-base gst-rtsp-server gst-python gst-plugins-good --extra-opts ogg:-DCMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM=3.5;
I did was to create a venv just for gvsbuild; may be that is why I did not get any other issues. I did use Py 3.13.3. gvsbuild likes to be on the bleeding edge or so it seems :)

I am going to wait for you all to sort this out.

I added paintable.props.gl_context.clear_current() to get rid of the wglShareLists errors but it produced messed up colors.

Either usepathlib to use for URI(which I did below), or you can also use the built-in Gst.filename_to_uri too as I stated earlier(I'm not sure which would be better)

Edit: I was able to fix this. The version of CUDA I had installed was 12.8 and the instructions show to install 12.4. I just deleted everything in the "LadaEnv312" folder and reinstalled everything again, but installed CUDA 12.8 like this

pip3 install torch torchvision torchaudio --index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu128.

Hi @seatv I was able to follow your instructions and get lada installed on Windows 11, thanks! But when I run it I get an error saying it cannot find CUDA. I do have version 12.8 installed as you can see from my nividia-smi result below.

The only thing I wasn't 100% sure on with your instructions was when adding lada to the Python path. I added it as a system environmental variable like below - that is the only thing I can think of that I might have done wrong.

And at the very top of my 'Path' system variable I've got the CUDA paths

Thanks for the effort guys! I've set up a Windows 11 VM and was able to install CLI and GUI.

As I was only testing on a VM I did not have sound and no Nvidia GPU but the GUI started and i was able to use it to preview and export. I couldn't test WSL as this would need some kind of nested virtualization but AFAIK its just wsl --install and then following the main/Linux install instructions.

I'm closing this ticket now but would appreciate if you could review this document and create a new issue or better yet a PR if I made a mistake.

(I did not run into the issue mention above about OpenGL though)

I am not a Windows user and will not test Lada on Windows so I'm relying on community contributions to keep the docs up-to-date. As you've figured out how to build the app on Windows maybe someone is interested in figuring out how to package it (e.g. via PyInstaller)? 😄

I reset a PC, Windows 11 24H2, installed NVidia drivers, installed CUDA 12.8.1 and then followed your instructions (https://github.com/ladaapp/lada/blob/main/docs/windows_install.md) step by step, up to Step#3, building and installing Gtk Plugin. Not sure what I see below is an error or normal - I am assuming it is an error. I did get a build error in Step-2, but importing dist...compiler fixed that and I was able to move forward:

The third patch command for me had to look like this:

So the first patches to patch ultralytics were successful? What error do you get when patching mmengine? The path you reported looks weird as it does not include python3.13. This path should point to the file we're patching. The parent directory of mmengine and ultralytics are the same so if there is an error with wrong directory prefix I would have expected that also the first patches fail.

AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_property'

That's expected if the gtk4 gstreamer plugin was not correctly installed

Ok, the cargo install statement needs to be explicit, as you suggested above. On doing that. plugin is installed correctly, if not, a new build directory is created in root folder of the drive of $Project drive and installed there, LOL.

One thing I can think of is that my graphics card is part of the Ryzen 4650GE and CUDA is running on the M60. CUDA is being used, and the playback, based on time display seems to be near real time.

I think this is what @ConnoisseurProtege reported in #27 as "messed up colors".
Can you adjust lada/gui/video_preview.py
and change this line


    if paintable.props.gl_context:
to


    if paintable.props.gl_context and sys.platform != 'win32':
and add the import for sys by adding at the beginning of the same file the the following line

import sys
This way we're not using GL on Windows even if it is available. Would be a workaround until the root cause is identified. Let me know if this works then I'll fix this add this in master.

I assume the missing \ between .venv and Lib is just a typo and you used LadaEnv313 instead of .venv?
So the ultralytics package/subdirectory and mmengine are not in the same directory? ultralytics is in LadaEnv313\Lib/python3.13/site-packages as currently assumed by the patch commands but mmengine in LadaEnv313\Lib/site-packages as shown in your screenshot? 🤔

I tried to reproduce this with

py -m test_venv
.\test_venv\Scripts\Activate.ps1
pip install mmengine ultralytics
This will then install both mmengine and ultralytics below .\test_venv\Lib\site-packages .

So no idea how you could end up with some packages in this python3.13 subdir and some directly in Lib and it still works.

Edit: In your first post in #27 you reported these patch commands:

I had two venvs, one for GTKBuild and one for Lada, I blew away the lada folder and started testing from Step 4 (it will take too long to build Gtk, will test on another machine when I get a GTX 1080 I ordered).

Just noticed one other thing... while installing wheels, the install for pygobject*.whl is invoked, we don't need to issue explicit command for pycairo*.whl, as the first command takes care of it;

I got this from the official gvsbuild docs and didn't check why they are not installing both wheels in the same command. I assume there is some reason for it and keep it as they recommend.

One more suggestion... as we are already in .ven/lada, I used ../lib/site....

The v3.1-accurate model is intended to be a replacement for v2. It was trained on the same data as v3.1-fast but uses a larger model architecture. v2 is even larger and was trained on a different dataset compared to the v3 or v3.1 series. When you're testing v3.1-accurate and think that v2 is still more accurate then please open a new issue.

yeah, didn't mention it as I hoped that v3.1-accurate will be just better and there is no need for v2 anymore. After a bit more testing v3.1-accurate is not as accurate as I initially saw. For the next release will document and package both v3.1-acurate and v2 as alternatives to the fast detection model until I can come up with something better...

From the above, your directory structure looks like this: C:\project\lada.venv - root of your virtual environment.
Did you execute the git command in that directory? If so, then lada would be cloned to C:\project\lada.venv\lada
You should set your PYTHONPATH to C:\project\lada.venv\lada
Invoke lada or lada-cli from C:\project\lada.venv\lada
If the above are true, then your gstreamer build is not complete.

Please try invoking lada-cli --version from the lada directory.

I use a PS1 file with the following content to setup. I add PYTHONPATH in the system environment variable.

### Usage instructions

1. Save all three files (`install_lada_portable.bat`, `install_lada_portable.ps1`, and `run_lada_gui.ps1`) together in a folder.

2. **Run** `install_lada_portable.bat` **as Administrator**.

3. Follow prompts to provide install path (default `I:\Lada`), choose VS Build Tools install or not, and select your CUDA PyTorch version.

4. After installation finishes, open PowerShell and run:

- Use lowercase `.mp4`/`.mkv` for input/output filenames to avoid format issues.
