蘭桂坊在中國內地的知名度由來已久，全國各地都有與蘭桂坊同名的酒吧，甚至成都有蘭桂坊的復刻版。隨著1978年夜店Disco Disco在蘭桂坊開業，這裡漸漸變成了香港夜生活的勝地。有時被稱為「蘭桂坊之父」的盛智文看到了蘭桂坊的潛力，在1980年代初買下了包括加州大廈在內的幾處物業，並在這些物業中開設娛樂場所。

這位出生於加拿大的香港居民後來加入了中國國籍，他表示蘭桂坊的顧客群體的變化無非是促進了商業。

他說，「我喜歡內地客人，西方客人來了點兩瓶啤酒，坐上一整晚。有錢的內地客人來了，會點很貴的東西，比如茅台，他們開香檳、消費很瘋狂，有些賬單能達到40萬至50萬港元」。
