Story prompt: "I'm surprised your family was more than willing to pay for all this," said Derrick to Victoria. The young teenage couple were out in Thailand, since Victoria had always wanted to see elephants up close and personal. Despite working part-time at her local zoo, the zoo didn't have elephants, and she didn't have clearance or enough experience to deal with animals up close. Which was a shame, since she was into zoology, among other things, since she was able to read. "Extended family," corrected Victoria with a smile, "they've got all the money to travel the world and bring an entire city's worth along with them." "Except this only applies to them and not your family." "Yeah, basically. Sounds almost unfair to have one side be made of money, but my parents and I are happy with just being average." Victoria's extended family had brought along her, her parents, Derrick, his parents, and his little sister for a months-long vacation to, as one of Victoria's aunt's put it, "anywhere that wasn't outer space", and even that wasn't out of the picture. Thailand was chosen not only because of Victoria, but because Derrick, as someone who enjoys extreme sports and outdoor activities, have heard of such places to go trekking and hiking. "Well, enough about money," continued Victoria, "We're already here!" The elephant sanctuary was bigger than expected. Large portions of nature stretched across as far as the eye can see. Elephants here that were once abused animals, now given the love and respect they deserved and needed. And as far as the rules go, as Victoria put it, "The elephants make the rules here." "Hey, hey, I get it," replied Derrick. "Yup. You can't just feed them when you feel like it, you can't just pet them unless they come up to you, and trust me, if they like you they will, and if you think a trek that lasts 30 minutes takes up to two hours because an elephant decided to do it's own thing, then, sorry, elephants' rules." "Trust me, I understand the concept of personal space, except for whenever I try to annoy you." "I let that happen 'cause I love you, Derrick," Victoria gave a light nudge with her elbow and a smile. As time passed by, Derrick smelled something amazing. "What is that that's cooking?" Victoria replied, "Elephant food! You make rice balls mixed with bananas, tamarinds and maize," as she shaped up a few of said rice balls. The elephants walked up, having smelled it as well. Derrick whispered, "Not gonna lie, this smells real good." Victoria replied, "No kidding." The locals who worked in the sanctuary taught the two to just let the elephants take them from their hands. Victoria was beyond happy. Derrick loved seeing her so ecstatic. "Kinda surprised you didn't ask for an elephant ride," said Victoria as one of the baby elephants took a rice ball, "Elephants' backs aren't meant for riding and only sanctuaries who care about money offer them. Which sucks since most elephants don't like that." Laughing lightly, Derrick replied, "I'm not cruel, besides, I'm not some general who'd ride elephants into mountains for war and lose an eye in the process." Victoria raised an eyebrow to that oddly specific statement, immediately asking Derrick, "Was that a reference to Hannibal Barca?" "Might be." "You know Carthaginian history?" "Yeah." "Still finding out new stuff about you." "It's part of the adventure." "There's a history nerd in there." "Maybe there is."

As the two teenagers continued shaping rice balls for the elephants, Victoria couldn't help but gaze out over the sanctuary, her heart swelling at the sight of such majestic creatures roaming freely. She watched as a playful calf nudged against its mother, while a few others ambled over, curiously sniffing at the small mound of food they were preparing. "You know," Victoria said, pausing for a moment to take in the scene, "it feels incredible to be here. So many people only see elephants in zoos, but this..." She gestured broadly. "This is their real home." Derrick nodded, eyes still on her. He admired her passion and couldn't resist teasing her a bit. "Is this why you want to become a zoologist? To give elephants their ‘real home’ back? Because you definitely have the zeal for it." Victoria blushed slightly, turning back to the rice balls as she tried to hide her embarrassment. "I just think animals deserve a life without cages. Sure, I love working with animals, but I want to make a difference. Just like these folks here," she said, gesturing to the sanctuary staff. "They’re doing an amazing job." Derrick reached over to squeeze her hand. "Well, I think you’d be amazing at it. I can totally see you in a lab somewhere, talking to a bunch of kids about elephants and maybe even saving a few in the process." "Me? A lab? No thanks!" Victoria laughed. "I want to be out here, in the field, where the elephants are, helping them and getting dirty, not stuck behind a desk." "Okay, okay, fair enough." He chuckled in agreement. "But I wouldn't mind you telling me about history while we’re out here too. 'A history nerd’—I could get used to that." With their little moment bubbling with laughter, a larger elephant ambled over, its massive feet quiet against the earth. It leaned down its trunk, flaring its nostrils as it approached the rice balls they had made. "Looks like we have an admirer," Victoria whispered in awe. "Hello there, buddy," Derrick cooed softly, extending a rice ball toward the massive creature. The elephant delicately wrapped its trunk around the treat and pulled it away. Derrick could hardly believe how gentle it was, especially given its size. "Did you ever think you’d be feeding elephants in Thailand?" Victoria asked, her eyes sparkling. "Honestly? Not a chance," he admitted, still captivated by the elephant. "But it's pretty freaking awesome. I mean, imagine telling our friends back home about this." Victoria grinned widely. "It would blow their minds! 'Oh, you went to the mall? Well, I fed an elephant in Thailand!'" Derrick laughed, and as the moments unfolded, he felt a sense of wonder he hadn’t experienced before. A golden thread of connection wove through the air, binding him closer to Victoria, to the elephants, and to the beauty of the world around them. "Hey, let’s take a selfie with our new friend!" he suggested, pulling out his phone. Victoria clasped her hands together, her face lighting up with excitement. "Yes! Let’s do it!" She positioned herself next to the elephant, who was now happily munching on the food. Derrick framed the shot and clicked the button, capturing their shared joy. “Perfect!” he declared, showing her the picture. She was beaming, a beautiful smile plastered on her face against the backdrop of greenery and the gentle giant beside them. As the day wore on, Derrick and Victoria journeyed further into the sanctuary. They learned about each elephant’s backstory, discovering tales of resilience amid heartbreak. They laughed as they watched the elephants roll in the mud, splattering dirt everywhere and making the sanctuary feel like a scene from a fairy tale. Victoria couldn't wipe the smile from her face. Every moment felt like a treasure, and Derrick was grateful that he could share it all with her. Later, as they sat by a small pond watching the elephants drink, Derrick turned to her. "You know, I think you’re right about one thing. This place... it’s more than just an adventure. It’s a reminder of what really matters." Her gaze met his, and their connection deepened. "What do you mean?" "That life is beautiful, messy, and unpredictable," he said, eyes reflecting the warm afternoon sun. "Just like these elephants. We should embrace it all—our dreams, our passions, and each other." Victoria nodded, her heart racing. "Well, I definitely want to embrace every moment with you." As Derrick took her hand once more, the gentle rustle of leaves and distant trumpeting of elephants surrounded them. In that serene moment, they understood that this trip was just the start of a much larger adventure together, one filled with love for animals, history, and even the occasional mud fight.
