Some people are born leaders, while others develop their skills over time. I am the latter, and I’m not ashamed to admit it, because that’s what makes me stronger and more dedicated to being a leader in my community. I have had multiple opportunities related to leadership, communication, and diversity, in and out of school, and I’m extremely grateful for them because each of these experiences has taught me lessons that I will cherish for life.
My most impactful leadership experience comes from the Citizens of the World Society. I joined as a freshman and served as secretary in my sophomore year, vice president in my junior year, and president in my senior year. During my time, I led the Hope for Life subgroup, aiding underprivileged widows and children, and oversaw an upcycling subgroup, teaching members to create projects from waste materials. This year, I organized a collaboration between COWS and FABE International Foundation, a well-known environmental organization, to educate local students about upcycling's environmental importance. This experience taught me patience and the need for balanced leadership.
As the eco-ambassador of FABE International Foundation, I worked to teach local kids how to upcycle plastic bottles into ottomans, first in person, and then online with the advent of COVID-19. I acquired valuable teaching and leadership skills through this experience and improved my ability to serve and engage with the community.
Under the aegis of Heirs to Our Oceans (H2OO) Global, I founded and chair the Youth Advisory Council in Nigeria, with a mission to bring together diverse individuals in Nigeria, achieve the United Nations Ocean Decade’s goals, and support youth in their communities. While it got me into trouble sometimes, I was fascinated by the mechanics behind everyday objects and needed to explore how things were put together.
That curiosity extended beyond physical stuff too. I constantly wondered about the natural world around me. Lying in the grass staring at clouds, I'd think about how those wispy things could hold so much water. On family hikes, I'd stop and trace the rings on a tree stump, imagining the story they told about that tree's life. Even a rainbow made me curious - I had to learn about how sunlight and rain could create such beauty. I wanted to understand everything, from the biggest mysteries of nature to the small gadgets around me.
As I grew up, my curiosity led me to make an impact. Seeing plastic litter Nigeria's beaches and roads was heartbreaking. Although we moved abroad when I was young, my early memories sparked my connection to my American identity. India, where I spent my vacations with my grandparents, left an even bigger imprint through time spent with family. I have vivid memories of clinging to my grandfather's hand, dodging rickshaws and stray cows on crowded Bangalore streets to shop at open-air markets with barrels of fragrant spices and fabrics. He would lift me onto his shoulders so I could take in the sights and sounds of Saris hanging out to dry, rather than getting lost in the bustling crowds. Nelson Mandela is a profound inspiration to me. His unwavering commitment to liberating Black Africans from the Apartheid regime and his enduring resilience during his extended imprisonment have deeply influenced my own determination to pursue my goals. Learning about him in my freshman year, I was moved by his recitation of "Invictus" throughout his incarceration, finding strength in its powerful words in the face of adversity. I continue this practice even today when I need strength to pursue my goals.
Having lived in Africa for over a decade, I've seen daily adversity and poverty. Mandela's unmatched ability to inspire a whole nation to break free from apartheid inspires my work, like founding the NextGen ARC club for technology education. When progress slows, I recall Mandela's unwavering conviction and push forward.
The parallels between the struggles of Nigerians and South Africans during apartheid are evident. Both nations faced deeply ingrained discrimination and racial divisions that fueled injustice. Witnessing Nigerians' resilience reinforced the importance of leaders like Mandela. I saw the impact of oppression and inequality in Nigeria, giving me a greater appreciation for Mandela's challenge. Describe a life event which you feel has prepared you to be successful in college.
It started as an unassuming lump on my neck. But as it grew, so did the cloud of uncertainty, until it consumed my thoughts. Thoughts of it would creep in unprompted, disrupting my daily activities. I started to dwell on possibilities, wondering if this could be something more sinister.
My mind raced ahead to clinical offices and sterile examination rooms before I had even consulted a doctor. I struggled to quiet this mental noise to prevent anxiety from overtaking logic and reason. The chilling words, "We need to perform a biopsy," induced anxiety as the anesthesia took hold. The stress was magnified by the inherent unreliability of the healthcare system in Nigeria. In a situation where trust was paramount, my skepticism added an extra layer of emotional turmoil.
When the initial tuberculosis diagnosis provided no relief, despair crept in. Questions pinged through my mind: would I need surgery? Had I taken life's joys for granted? Living in a developing country has ingrained skepticism. This led the doctors to seek a second opinion from specialists in Turkey.
While waiting for those results, my mind raced through countless scenarios. I pondered over my own mortality, staring into that dark abyss we all try to ignore. How could I leave this world so soon when I have so much yet to experience?
My loved ones kept me tethered through it all. Their strength flowed into me during moments of doubt. But the weight of their worry was almost too heavy to bear. I knew they suffered with me. I wished to spare them this anguish.
“Tumor”. Imagine being 17 years old and hearing the specialist utter the word tumor. I felt the floor drop out from under me as the doctor's voice seemed to echo from far away. Was it benign or malignant? The uncertainty was palpable. The limbo was agonizing.
Underneath swirled a deep sadness at the thought my path might now veer into the unknown. Yet mingled in was also anger - that some errant cells had disrupted my peace. And beneath even the anger flowed determination. As the emotions roiled within me, I took a long, deep breath; the first in what felt like an eternity. This was not the end - merely the start of an unanticipated chapter. I resolved to meet this challenge with courage, strength, and the support of loved ones.
Finally receiving the benign diagnosis lifted a weight I had almost grown accustomed to bearing. But strangely, the clarity of hindsight made me realize how profoundly the ordeal had changed my perspective. My brush with uncertainty left indelible impacts - quiet shifts only detected once the dust had settled. I had been shaken, but I emerged centered on life's frailty and fleeting gifts.
Over the course of several months, the tumor slowly began to shrink. I became hopeful and resolved to remain positive. Although, I know the tumor could recur. But this time, I am prepared. Strengthened by adversity, I am no longer the passive victim of random chance. Armed with knowledge, resolve, and a voice inside that insists, I have so much life to experience.
Fate may yet have obstacles in store for me. Now I greet each day with purpose and presence. My roots have grown deeper, drawing nutrients from the rains weathered. Though battered, this tree still stands tall, facing the skies with renewed spirit.

The summer of 2021 was one that forever changed my perspective on life. My family and I had just returned from a vacation in the Maldives, a trip we had been looking forward to for over a year. The beaches were pristine, the weather ideal, and overall it was the perfect getaway after being cooped up at home during the pandemic. Little did we know our relaxation would soon come to an abrupt end.
Within days of returning home, my parents, sister, and grandmother started showing symptoms of COVID-19. As each day passed, their conditions worsened. Fevers, body aches, coughs, and fatigue left them bedridden. My worst fear was realized - my entire family had contracted the virus on our trip. I was the only one who had been spared.
At first, I couldn't help but feel a sense of injustice. Why was I the only one not afflicted by the virus? It felt unfair that I had to shoulder the burden of caring for my family while they got to rest and recover. But I soon realized the opportunity I had been given. My good health was not bad luck - it was a chance for me to give back to my loved ones who had always taken care of me, one defined by resilience and responsibility.
Over the next few weeks, I took on responsibilities I never dreamed I'd have at my age. I managed the household, preparing food, cleaning, running errands for medicine and groceries. I checked in on my family members constantly, monitoring their symptoms, comforting them when they felt defeated by the virus' toll on their bodies. Caring for my grandmother was especially challenging. At her age, the virus posed serious risks, so I had to be vigilant about keeping her hydrated, nourished, and as active as possible.
It was the hardest I've ever worked, both physically and emotionally. But through it all, I gained invaluable life skills. I learned how to cook for a family, budget household expenses, care for sick loved ones, and so much more. This experience taught me just how much inner strength I have when called upon to help others.
Above all, going through this challenged deepened my gratitude for all my family does for me. Though it was difficult seeing those I love suffer, I was genuinely thankful for the chance to give back to them. Being able to lift their spirits and support them through such a scary, trying time made me realize just how lucky I am to have their unwavering love. I emerged from that summer with a greater knowledge of myself, my abilities, and my passion for caring for others. COVID-19 turned out to be an unexpected but welcome test, one that made me more capable, confident, and committed to giving to those who have given so much to me.

My fascination for unraveling the mysteries of how things work began at a young age. I still vividly remember receiving my first Lego Mindstorms kit in 5th grade. I would spend hours constructing intricate designs from the colorful interlocking bricks before programming them to perform tasks like navigating around objects and grabbing items. This early exposure to the fundamentals of robotics and coding sparked a lifelong curiosity about the intersection of technology, innovation, and problem-solving.
In middle school, my interests expanded as I disassembled household items, immersing myself in the intricate workings of circuitry and mechanics. This exploration expanded to more advanced projects, such as building a maglev train prototype with electromagnetic suspension. These hands-on experiences ignited my interest in electrical and mechanical engineering. I have always sought to turn challenges into opportunities for growth. Born an American citizen to Indian parents, I relocated to Lagos, Nigeria at the tender age of 6. Living there for over a decade amid stark inequality and scarce resources profoundly molded me. I wholeheartedly embraced Nigeria's richly diverse cultural tapestry, transforming difficulties into chances to catalyze positive change within myself and beyond.
Seeking new horizons of personal growth outside academics, I cultivated an array of passions including music, sports, and researching new technologies. Realizing the scarcity of reliable, high-quality resources in Nigeria to nourish these interests, I adapted to this reality and took the initiative to pursue my interests through available online resources.
I independently mastered the Spanish guitar by viewing instructional videos, progressing rapidly beyond elementary lessons. In middle school guitar class, my teacher quickly realized I deserved more advanced training and encouraged me to explore outside resources. Lacking avenues to perform, I proposed forming a music band at my school. My teacher approved and I assembled a group of students, becoming the lead guitarist and band leader. COVID halted this, but I persevered, training with my father. To further hone my skills, in 2022 I enrolled in the NEWKS tennis Summer academy 4-week camp in Texas, eager to earn a UTR ranking. The exposure helped me getting a UTR ranking, something I’m really proud of. Where there is a will, there is way!
My passion for technology and improving lives also faced challenges in Nigeria, lacking robotics clubs and materials. I took online courses but couldn't compete in robotics contests or hackathons as there were none organized locally. To help others, I founded a rocketry club promoting STEM and an AI/robotics/computing club, giving back what I couldn't access myself.
When COVID struck, I put my technical skills to use - creating 3D printed masks and an AI algorithm to detect maskless people. The pandemic provided opportunities to manifest my perseverance and problem-solving abilities for the greater good.

As I grew older, I also became increasingly concerned about our planet's diminishing critical resources like clean air, forests, and water. However, I struggled to connect my interests in tinkering and sustainability until learning about 80Wash's breakthrough. The news about 80Wash, an Indian startup that created a novel "dry steam" washing technology using minimal water and chemicals, profoundly impacted my views on engineering education.
As someone with a lifelong fascination for understanding how machines work coupled with a passion for environmental conservation, 80Wash's innovation showed me how I could synthesize these interests through the right engineering education. Their technology requiring limited chemicals demonstrated that engineering can create solutions to benefit humanity without straining the earth’s resources.

Yet the five experiences that stand out as the north stars of self-discovery and which I truly believe will illuminate my path through college would be cultivating leadership abilities, embracing diversity's richness, nimbly adapting to change, pursuing passions beyond academics, and discovering the joy of community service.
Leadership arose in me not by destiny but through commitment. In Citizens of the World Society school club, I progressed from secretary to president through sheer hard work and grit, learning that service and uplifting others eclipses self. LuminationZ’s sessions revealed collaboration's infectious power to spark creativity and unite teams toward the greater good. Physics helps me see the world as something deeper than a random combination of objects and figures. My computer is resting on this desk because its normal force is equal to its weight and there are no horizontal forces acting on it. In a frictionless world, if I slid my textbook it would never stop, which is a fact I marvel at to date. Every occurrence has a scientific explanation, and physics is at the heart of it, which is why it fascinates me.
When I first enrolled in robotics courses, I was struck by the immense impact that physics has on developing technologies that improve our world. My lifelong curiosity about how the mechanics of the universe work led me to embrace robotics' theoretical underpinnings, motivating me to join an introductory course.
I expanded my hands-on engineering education during the summer after sophomore year by participating in the Young Technology Scholars program. There, I explored advanced concepts like motion controls, algorithms, and the integration of software with hardware to enable autonomous robotics. My life changed forever, the day I stepped into the FABE International Foundation office. I was awestruck by the vibrant, colorful furniture crafted from recycled materials - old tires transformed into tables, spoons framed into mirrors. The founder explained how she personally upcycled waste into these creative pieces. I decided to intern with them with the objective of sharing this art with others in my community.
That summer, before my junior year, I embarked on a mission, teaching children in Lagos schools and markets to upcycle plastic bottles into seats, cups into lamps, and glass bottles into flower vases. The bustling local markets in Nigeria are intimidating for expatriates, coupled with the lack of electricity in the classrooms, but I refused to give up. The Lagos governor congratulated me on World Cleanup Day during one of our events.
In my school, I founded the upcycling division within an environmental club, which I am currently the president of. We curated our own videos to educate the kids and eventually donated the seats to schools and households. I even presented my work at the Global Issues Service Summit in front of thousands of people.
This experience shaped my life. It rooted my connections and ignited a passion to help save the environment. The resilience and determination of individuals who came from different backgrounds deeply inspired me. I honed my problem-solving, public speaking, and leadership skills along the way and thus expanded my reach.

Life is unpredictable. Some things are beyond our control, and we must learn to plan for uncertainty and adapt to change.
I learned this lesson during my freshman year of high school, facing an ordeal that upended my world. A lump on my neck sparked deep uncertainty, disrupting my daily life. As it grew, my mind raced with dire possibilities before even seeing a doctor, but hearing the chilling words “tumor” after a biopsy shook me. It stirred sadness, anger, and determination. Doubting Nigeria’s healthcare, I sought an opinion from doctors in Turkey. Awaiting results, I pondered my mortality, staring into the abyss. Loved ones grounded me throughout. The eventual benign diagnosis lifted a huge burden, though the experience profoundly altered my perspective on life’s fragility and fleeting gifts.
Initially, I lost hope and focus, but I became stronger, helping me regain lost ground and complete my sophomore year with resilience.
This challenge taught me that life often deviates from our plans. But with courage, support and an openness to change, we can adapt and overcome life’s unpredictability.
The Covid-19 pandemic also significantly changed my daily life and perspective. Unable to meet friends or play sports, I initially struggled as a social person who thrives in groups. The uncertainty of when normalcy would return compounded my challenges. Though it was mentally exhausting to focus amidst the chaos, over time I adapted by finding new ways to stay connected virtually. My fascination for unraveling the mysteries of how things work began at a young age. I still vividly remember receiving my first Lego Mindstorms kit in 5th grade. I would spend hours constructing intricate designs from the colorful interlocking bricks before programming them to perform tasks like navigating around objects and grabbing items. This early exposure to the fundamentals of robotics and coding sparked a curiosity about the intersection of technology, innovation, and problem-solving.
In middle school, my interests expanded as I disassembled household items, immersing myself in the intricate workings of circuitry and mechanics. This exploration expanded to more advanced projects, such as building a maglev train prototype with electromagnetic suspension.
