Lasciò perdere l’interfaccia per concentrarsi sulla desolazione nella sua stanza. Dinnanzi a sé c’era la cosiddetta bandiera di Aedostul: uno sfondo blu con due strisce nere sulla destra e una bianca a sinistra. Tale bandiera era universalmente riconosciuta come il simbolo dei DB e molto presente negli spazi pubblici o luoghi dello Stato – come la caserma a cui apparteneva – ma era raro trovarla in case private. Almeno che non fosse la casa di un fervido sostenitore del partito quale lui era.
Aedostul aveva scritto alcuni libri, come ad esempio Lost Elite, Manifesto dei DB, Una nuova era ed altri, tutti presenti su uno scaffale a sinistra. Dylan aveva letto ognuno di essi più volte, ma non erano neppure sufficienti data la complessa mole degli argomenti trattati da Aedostul. Per cui viveva con la costante impressione di non averli compresi appieno, o che il suo punto di vista fosse in qualche modo falsato.
Dylan non possedeva molti beni, non perché non poteva permetterseli, più che altro non gli interessavano. C’erano alcune attrezzature sportive, vari altri libri e una piccola collezione di armi da fuoco e spade. Il gas era troppo raro e costoso per l’impiego civile, ma non l’elettricità: I fornelli erano a induzione e poco usati, in quanto si nutriva prevalentemente di proteine e legumi.
Da civile Dylan era solito indossare abiti grigi, celesti o neutri, coi capelli pettinati prepotentemente in avanti. Il completo da incursore, ben tenuto alla sua sinistra e già stirato, era blu a tinta unita, se non fosse per lo sbocco delle maniche, i gomiti e le spalle, che invece erano nero. I colori della bandiera di Aedostul venivano riciclati in ogni modo possibile – pensò Dylan – ed altre uniformi presentavano combinazioni diverse.
Con gli stivali militari neri era tornato l’incursore giurato che era solito essere. Poi, ignorando lo stato in cui era la sua abitazione, ne uscì chiudendosi dietro la porta.
DYLAN NEAR diceva la targhetta fuori dalla porta, anche se era solo un pezzo di carta stampato, ritagliato e attaccato col biadesivo. Avrebbe voluto aggiungere Incursore ma era proibito dalle regole condominiali. Comunque già tutti in città sapevano chi era e cosa facesse.
«Il lavoro chiama?» disse una voce di vecchia. Era la signora Yashmil, un’anziana signora coi lineamenti antipatici e i capelli diradati. Una vicina tranquilla pensava Dylan, se non fosse per il volume della televisione sempre sparato alle stelle.
Si limitò ad annuirle.
«Voi ragazzi state facendo proprio un bel lavoro. Ad averti come vicino, mi sento più tranquilla» Dylan le rivolse un sorriso falso e sforzato
«Scientia Perfectio Est» disse Dylan. Quello era il motto dei DB, che significava la conoscenza è perfezione. Era ben consapevole che non c’entrasse nulla, ma gli venne improvvisa voglia di fare lo splendido.
Colpita e affondata, la signora Yashmil si limitò a fissare Dylan con silente ammirazione. Lui commentò qualcosa, poi scese le scale. Si trovava al nono piano e tutti gli altri usavano l’ascensore. Ma lui voleva tenersi in allenamento.
Infine si trovò nella città.

He ignored the interface to focus on the desolation in his room. In front of him was the so-called Aedostul flag: a blue background with two black stripes on the right and a white one on the left. This flag was universally recognized as the symbol of the DB and was very present in public spaces or places of the State - such as the barracks to which he belonged - but it was rare to find it in private homes. At least not unless it was the house of an avid supporter of the party, like him.
Aedostul had written some books, such as Lost Elite, Manifesto of the DB, A New Era, and others, all present on a shelf on the left. Dylan had read each one of them several times, but they were not enough given the complex mass of topics treated by Aedostul. So he lived with the constant impression of not having fully understood them, or that his point of view was somehow distorted.
Dylan did not own many possessions, not because he could not afford them, but because he was not interested in them. There were some sports equipment, several other books, and a small collection of firearms and swords. Gas was too rare and expensive for civilian use, but not electricity: the stoves were induction and little used, as he mainly ate proteins and legumes.
As a civilian, Dylan was used to wearing gray, blue, or neutral clothes, with his hair combed forward aggressively. The commando uniform, well kept to his left and already ironed, was solid blue, except for the sleeve outlets, elbows and shoulders, which instead were black. The colors of the Aedostul flag were recycled in every way possible - Dylan thought - and other uniforms featured different combinations.
With the black military boots, the sworn commando who he used to be had returned. Then, ignoring the state of his home, he left, closing the door behind him.
DYLAN NEAR read the sign outside the door, even though it was just a piece of paper printed, cut, and attached with double-sided tape. He wanted to add Commando, but it was prohibited by condominium rules. Anyway, everyone in the city already knew who he was and what he did.
"Work calls?" said an old voice. It was Mrs. Yashmil, an elderly lady with unpleasant features and thinning hair. A quiet neighbor thought Dylan, if it weren't for the volume of the TV always blasting.
He just nodded at her.
"You guys are doing a really great job. Having you as a neighbor makes me feel more relaxed." Dylan gave her a fake and strained smile.
"Scientia Perfectio Est," said Dylan. That was the motto of the DB, which meant knowledge is perfection. He was well aware that it had nothing to do with it, but he suddenly felt like showing off.
Impressed and stunned, Mrs. Yashmil limited herself to staring at Dylan in silent admiration. He made a comment, then went down the stairs. He was on the ninth floor, and everyone else used the elevator. But he wanted to keep himself in training.
Finally, he found himself in the city.
