Our proposal (\citealp{Choshen2022FusingFM} and in parallel \citep{wortsman2022model,matena2021merging}) to combine several neural models into one is now called model merging. Merging is efficient and even in our state-of-the-art methods \citep{DBLP:conf/nips/YadavTCRB23,knots} requires just averaging and deleting model weights. While those are only preliminary steps in modular or collaborative pretraining methods (see \S\ref{sec:future}), model merging, became a whole research field of its own including hundreds of papers bringing deeper understanding of model weights and losses, \textbf{tens of thousands} of models made by the community. Model recycling \citep{DBLP:conf/emnlp/ChoshenVDSK23} branched to other subfields such as mixture of expert merging \citep{yadav2024survey}. All those efforts harness diversity for training and reduce compute. What about tapping into expertise for data?


For the public, LLMs are conversation agents. Still, until recently no \textbf{human-model interaction} data has been available.
Instead, we have studied image generation models, finding that humans adapt their own language to fit the model’s implicit expectations \citep{DBLP:conf/emnlp/Don-YehiyaCA22}. However, the lack of LLM chats for study was barring any real understanding of what these models are used for, what risks are induced by them, the effects of interaction on humans and models, and where they fail. Thus, we created a way for users to contribute their \href{https://sharelm.github.io/}{conversations}, and a \href{https://huggingface.co/datasets/shachardon/ShareLM}{pool} collecting data from this and other projects (currently sizing 3M+ chats, including my LLM-aided rephrases of this very sentence, \citealp{don2024sharelm}). With the data, we found that humans react to LLMs and give feedback, as they would with humans, despite the LLMs' inability to improve upon this feedback. We propose to harness this to develop interactive systems without explicit labeling \citep{DBLP:conf/emnlp/Don-YehiyaCA23}, this offers a cheap and sustainable alternative to manually collecting millions of human annotations \citep{dubey2024llama}. This, however, is just the beginning of open human feedback collection and use \citep{DonYehiya2024TheFO}, which is elaborated on in the future steps \S\ref{sec:future}.
