Второе отделение Академии наук сочло нужным помещать «вообще слова, составляющие принадлежность языка в разные эпохи  его существования, потому что словарь не есть выбор, но полное си­ стематическое собрание слов, сохранившихся в памятниках письмен­ ности, так и в уст ах народа».8 Иначе говоря, в первом случае была поставлена задача составлениясловаря современного языка норматив­ ного типа, а во втором — лексикографического труда, являющего собой сокровищницу языка «на протяжении многих веков от первых письмен­ ных памятников до позднейших произведений нашей письменности».9 Возможность пойти этими двумя кардинально несходными путями не исчерпывала всей трудност и выбора. Сложность его усугублялась язы­ ковой реальностью. Воздействие своеобразной языковой ситуации не замедлило сказаться на своеобразии самого типа задуманных слова­ рей. Так первому из них в ка честве нормативного надлежало отразить языковую систему, но русская письменность запечатлела их не одну, а две — русскую и церковнославянскую. Л. Л. Кутина вскрыла историче­ скую специфику словарных с татей САР. Указав, что здесь в описании слова впервые была получена та лексико-семантическая абстракция, которую называют «словарным словом», она замечает: «Однако сло­ варное слово в САР имеет сущест венные особенности: абстракция эта здесь расширена до охвата семантических единиц двух языков, рус­ ского и славянского»^1? Формулируя базовые для категории лексической системы литера­ турного языка понятия активного и пассивного запаса слов, Л. В. Щер­ ба отметил особую сложность последнего из них и то, что пассивный за­ пас определяется «начитанностью соответственного человеческого кол­ лектива, тем кругом произведений, которые обязательно читаются в данном обществе».15 Именно в этом он видел, в частности, причину с оставления на том этапе Вторым отделением Академии наук Слова­ ря церковнославянского и русского языка: «... Оно не могло поступить иначе, поскольку старшее поколение того времени грамоте училось еще по часослову и псалтыри. Для него церковнославянские слова были пас­ сивным словарным запасом, который как-то входил в систему лексики русского языка и в той или другой мере определял значение и оттенки разных русских слов».16 В отмеченном качестве второй академический словарь, таким образом, близок к первому, но тип лексикографичес ко­ го труда теперь был избран иной.
